THE LATE PATRICK RODGERS

Oldest Resident of Martinsburg,

Survived by 8 Children, 30 Grand Children

and 3 Great Grand Children.

 

Patrick Rodgers one of the oldest resident of Lewis County, and the oldest of the town of Martinsburg, died Monday, February 2, aged 93 years, 10 months and 16 days. He was born in county Wicklow, Ireland, March 16, 1820, and was one of a family of twelve children, of which only one sister, Mrs. Eliza Carlin, of Michigan, survives. When 17 years of age he came to America and found employment with Chester Coe, of Leyden. He worked for farmers in that locality until June 15, 1851, when he was united in marriage with Miss Bridget Cannan, of Leyden, and lived at Leyden for about five years, when he removed to Maple Ridge on the farm on which he died. In 1912 he bought the place on the West Road known as the Wllliam Sheldon place, and moved there In March of the same year. On January 24, 1918 (1913), his wife died, and he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Dembeck, of Lowville, and remained there until November last, when he returned to the old homestead and lived with his son, John, until he died. He was conscious until the last. He was a man of great endurance and ambition, and active about his farm work until four years ago, when a physician was called to treat him for the first time in his life. He leaves to mourn his death eight children, thirty grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Five daughters and three sons survive, Mrs. Robert Lynch, Thomas and, John Rodgers of Maple Ridge, Mrs. Christopher Martzloff, of West Martinsburg; Mrs. Jacob Dembeck, of Lowville; Mrs. C. L. Bacon, of Glens Falls; Mrs. Daniel Mahoney, Denver, Col., and Patrick Rodgers, of Grand Valley, Col. His funeral was largely attended at Maple Ridge Catholic church, Rev. George L. Murray officiating; Interment at Maple Ridge cemetery.

Patrick Rogers, one of the oldest residents of Lewis county, died Tuesday at the home of his son, John Rogers, on Maple Ridge, town of Martlnsburg, aged nearly 94 years. Mr. Rogers was born In Ireland, but came to Lewis county when a young man. When naturalized he walked from Maple Ridge to Watertown and return, making the journey in a single day Two sons and two daughters survive, John and Thomas Rogers, of Maple Ridge; Mrs. Christopher Martzloff and Mrs. Joseph Dillenback ,of Lowville. The funeral services will be held today at the Maple Ridge Catholic Church.

JAMES E. M'GRATH

Born in Martinsburg, January 23, 1864;

Died In Clayton, April 18, 1929.

 

James E. McGrath, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James McGrath and born in Martinsburg, January 23, 1864, died last Thursday at his home in Clayton, following an illness of six months. Mr. McGrath passed the greater part of his life in Lewis county and conducted cheese factories in Highmarket and elsewhere. For several years he operated the Crown Brand milk plant in Demark and for the last eight years had served as inspector for the Dairymen's League, making his home in Clayton. Mr. McGrath was a member of Clayton Council, 350, Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the local body. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Catherine Walsh McGrath; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Brennon, of Brownville, and Mrs. Clarence Thibault, of Clayton; one brother, Thomas W. McGrath, of Lowville. Funeral services were held from St. Mary's church Saturday morning, with interment at Clayton.

MRS. JAMES McGRATH

Constableville friends were shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. James McGrath, of Clayton, who died at Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where she had been taken from Dr. Fawdry's dental parlors an hour before. Mrs. McGrath moved from Denmark to Clayton about 11 years ago. Mrs. McGrath left her home in Clayton in the afternoon and went to the dental office to have some work done, but was taken ill and was removed to the hospital. Katherine E. Walsh was a daughter of the late John and Ann A. Gilroy Walsh. She was born in Highmarket in 1872 and spent much of her life in her home town. For a number of years she was a successful teacher in the rural schools. About 1900 she married James McGrath, who died in April, 1929. Mrs. McGrath was a faithful member of St. Patrick's church, Highmarket. She was a lady who possessed a large acquaintance and her death has caused deep regret. A week ago she visited her sister. Miss Margaret Walsh, of this village, and was expected soon to return for a longer visit. She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Miss Margaret Walsh, of this place and three nieces, Bernice, Katherine and Mary Walsh, all of Utica. The funeral will be held in St. Mary's church, Clayton, Monday morning at 9 o'clock a. m. and burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

McGRATH PHALON

Born June 6, 1840; Died July 5, 1931

at the Home of Her Daughter, in Lowville,

 

One of Lowville’s oldest residents, Mrs. Ellen McGrath Phalon, departed this life Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. L. Schermerhorn, Jackson Street, at the age of 91 years. She had been in failing health the past four years and seriously ill since November. Mrs. Phalon was born June 6, 1840, a daughter of John and Honora Cunningham McGrath and was the last of a family of six children. Christmas day, 1868, she was married at Constablevllle to Michael Phalon, who was then home on furlough from the Union service. After the war they took up their residence In Lowville. Mr. Phalon died in 1890. Shortly after his death, Mrs. Phalon made her home with her daughter, where she continued to live until her death. Mrs. Phalon was a member of St. Peter's church and of the League of the Sacred Heart and was active in the work of the church while health permitted.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. B. L. Schermerhorn and Mrs. John D. Dence, Lowville; two granddaughters, Mrs. Henry M. Donihee, Larchmont, and Mrs. Howard Cannon, Syracuse; two grandsons, Edward B. Schermerhorn, this village, and John H. Scheremerhorn, New York; and four great grandchildren. The funeral was held from St. Peter's church, Tuesday at 9:80 a. m, Rev. George L.
